What do you think of when you think of medical assistants? It's different for everyone. Some people visualize working in a physician's office, helping patients figure out forms and assisting on general procedures. Medical assistant schools are specialized schools that offer different programs under the medical assistant umbrella. The diplomas or certifications can be anywhere from one to two years. If it's a one-year program, you get a diploma. If it's a two-year program, you get an associate degree. The education is very hands-on, giving you the skills you need to break into one of these careers. You are taught by people who know the business and can give you the instruction you need. You may also do practical work, practicing your skills on patients and learning how to work in high-stress situations – you will probably be offered an internship to help you make contacts and get a job. You'll also learn about how medical offices and labs work so that you can be prepared when you get out into the working world.

Your coursework will cover lab practices, office techniques, patient care, and more. You'll probably learn some chemistry and biology along the way, as well as mathematical techniques. There's a lot to learn. Medical assistants are part of the backbone of the industry – they staff the radiology centers, the community care institutions, and the labs. They analyze results, take blood, and help with surgery. Because the population is aging, people who are skilled in the medical field are needed to take jobs and look after elderly and disabled people who are in need of medical care.
