Choosing a Career or Being Chosen?

So how do you go about choosing a career? Maybe you’ll find it helpful if you rephrase the question: how do you know what career has chosen you? That might be a better way to look at career choice, especially if you’re one of those people who can be called indecisive. This idea hikes back to the old religious idea of calling, too, by the way, so it’s a time tested idea.

You can know what career has chosen you by looking back over your life up to this point and thinking of the moments that have really stuck with you, things you have done that have really interested you (maybe you even felt lost in those things) and times you’ve felt really passionate about an event. Those are the triggers telling you where to start thinking about a career choice. If you put those together, ask yourself what kind of picture does it form?

Today, it has become customary for many people to take a lot of time to think about the right trade. Some of that thinking should even take place while you are in school. In fact, you should never stop asking whether or not you are making the right career choices. Even though we live longer than ever before, life is still too short to waste it in a dead end job or spending every day doing something that makes you unhappy.

In the end, though, it is helpful to think of it not as your decision but a decision that has been partly made for you already, no matter whether you believe that is by Fate, Divine Providence, genetics or your upbringing.
